Report: DAMAGEPLAN Fans Concerned Following Attack On Band In Ohio

December 9, 2004

The Associated Press is reporting that stunned fans around the country are checking in at DAMAGEPLAN's web site early Thursday following reports that a gunman's attack on the Texas-based heavy metal band during an Ohio concert left at least five people dead.

The attack on DAMAGEPLAN began as the musicians started playing their first song Wednesday night. A witness said the gunman first targeted guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, shooting him multiple times at point-blank range at the crowded Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio.

The gunman killed at least four people and wounded at least two others before police fatally shot him. Authorities have not released the victims' names.

Dozens of messages were posted to the Dallas band's web site after the shootings.

"This is the worst day in metal history," one posting read.

"The metal world feels your pain," another wrote.

Abbott and his brother, Vinnie Paul Abbott, formed DAMAGEPLAN in 2003. The band was in the midst of a national tour, having performed at Fort Worth's Ridglea Theater on Nov. 4. The musicians were headlining the Ohio show, which included two other groups. They were also scheduled to perform Thursday in Flint, Mich.

Abbott and his brother grew up in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Their father, country-western songwriter Jerry Abbott, owned a recording studio in the area.
